Chester and Helen Felt Oral History Recording Room Up and Running
Thanks to a generous
grant from the Helen Felt family of The Dalles, Harney County Library is
now the home of the only known recording room in the region dedicated to
recording and preserving the oral histories of its citizens. The
Chester and Helen Felt Oral History Room is equipped with the latest
digital technology for recording small interviews. This
sound-insulated room and its recording equipment not only can preserve
the voice of the storyteller, but also the photographs and other small
artifacts through a small camera stand located in the same room.
The storyteller's voice and photographic images are recorded directly to
a computer hard drive, from which DVD copies can be made for permanent
archival storage, for scholarly research, and for viewing by library
patrons on our DVD players. In some cases where the interview
candidate or an event cannot come to the recording room, the recording
room can go to them as the equipment is fully portable for "remote"
recordings. Use of the oral history room requires a
library-certified operator and reservations to use the room can be made
through the library staff.

Reading can change a person's life...
"Read a book to a child and you teach him for a
day. Teach the child to read and you open up to him the world of imagination and
learning for a lifetime."
